When Nathan Mendoza heard Sunday that the all-time heat record might be broken in Death Valley National Park, he called to find someone to come with him from Orange County to the hottest place on Earth.

“We thought it was a great opportunity to see history, and when history is within driving distance you can’t pass it up,” Petrosyan said while standing in the warmth of Death Valley’s Furnace Visitor Center Creek.

As they both stood in front of the thermometer, which had a reading slightly higher than the actual temperature, it showed over 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

While standing outside in blistering weather, Chandler Murphy noted that “it feels like you’re in a hot sauna.”

Nichole Andler, who is a Death Valley park ranger and the park’s chief of interpretation and education, said the most popular months for tourists in the park are spring, but these late summer months heat is becoming popular.

“We’ve seen, over the last few years, a trend where July and August have seen over 100,000 visitors per month,” Andler said.

Yet Death Valley’s summer popularity doesn’t come without its risks. The extreme heat in the national park this year has already resulted in one death, a 65-year-old man from San Diego who died earlier this month. Andler said that while not all the details are known, the man likely died of heat-related illness.

Andler called the death “very sad” and said Death Valley staff are trying to educate guests on how to be safe with hot cooking.

The first tip Andler shared to stay safe in the heat is to drink water, and in Death Valley, more water than usual.

“You are exercising in extreme conditions, so a bottle of water is not enough. We recommend four liters per person per day,” Andler said.

Andler said don’t leave the air conditioner in your car or the visitor center. He also noted that the summer months are not the time to drive through Death Valley without air conditioning, even at night.

Another tip Andler said is to let people back home know you’re going to Death Valley before you go, so if they don’t hear from you, they can let the staff know you’re missing.
