When Nathan Mendoza heard Sunday that the all-time heat record might be broken in Death Valley National Park, he called to find someone to come with him from Orange County to the hottest place on Earth.
Death Valley Park Closes Due To Floods Weeks After Near Record Temperature
After checking that his car was in good condition and filling a cooler with ice and water bottles, Mendoza and friend Rob Petrosyan drove off.
“We thought it was a great opportunity to see history, and when history is within driving distance you can’t pass it up,” Petrosyan said while standing in the warmth of Death Valley’s Furnace Visitor Center Creek.
As they both stood in front of the thermometer, which had a reading slightly higher than the actual temperature, it showed over 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Man Found In Death Valley National Park After His Car Runs Out Of Gas, Officials Say
The National Weather Service predicts that Sunday’s high in Death Valley could approach and reach the highest temperature ever recorded – 134 degrees Fahrenheit – a feat that occurred in July 1913 and was recognized by the World Meteorological Organization.
But the record remains out of reach, as Sunday’s high of 128 degrees fell six degrees short of the record high.
The temperatures in Death Valley come during a broader heat wave that has put about a third of Americans nationwide under some type of heat advisory, watch or warning.

Las Vegas, which on Sunday tied the daily record high for July 16th with a temperature of 116 degrees Fahrenheit, is no exception. In response to the high temperatures, Clark County opened several cooling stations throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
Such extreme heat can have fatal consequences. A heat wave in parts of the South and Midwest killed more than a dozen people last month.
At Death Valley’s Furnace Creek Visitor Center, many of the heat seekers taking photos from the thermometer and chilling at the visitor center are visiting the United States from other countries.
Death Valley Smashes Heat Record, 2nd Year In A Row
Canadian couple Chandler and Joshua Murphy arrived in Death Valley after spending time in Yosemite and Sequoia national parks. They would have liked to visit the park, but the couple said they did not plan their visit to Death Valley to take place on the same day that threatens to break the 110-year heat record.
While standing outside in blistering weather, Chandler Murphy noted that “it feels like you’re in a hot sauna.”
Nichole Andler, who is a Death Valley park ranger and the park’s chief of interpretation and education, said the most popular months for tourists in the park are spring, but these late summer months heat is becoming popular.
Death Valley May Have Just Measured Hottest Temperature Ever On Earth
“We’ve seen, over the last few years, a trend where July and August have seen over 100,000 visitors per month,” Andler said.
Yet Death Valley’s summer popularity doesn’t come without its risks. The extreme heat in the national park this year has already resulted in one death, a 65-year-old man from San Diego who died earlier this month. Andler said that while not all the details are known, the man likely died of heat-related illness.
Andler called the death “very sad” and said Death Valley staff are trying to educate guests on how to be safe with hot cooking.

The first tip Andler shared to stay safe in the heat is to drink water, and in Death Valley, more water than usual.
“You are exercising in extreme conditions, so a bottle of water is not enough. We recommend four liters per person per day,” Andler said.
Andler said don’t leave the air conditioner in your car or the visitor center. He also noted that the summer months are not the time to drive through Death Valley without air conditioning, even at night.

Another tip Andler said is to let people back home know you’re going to Death Valley before you go, so if they don’t hear from you, they can let the staff know you’re missing.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Monday that they will check the reading of 130 degrees, as it has been doing the reading on August 16 since last year.

But the all-time world record, which became 108 on Saturday, is disputed by some in the weather community.
Death Valley Prepares For Record Breaking Heat
Christopher C. Burt, weather historian at Weather Underground, published An Investigation of Death Valley’s 134°F World Temperature Record in 2016, courtesy of William T. Reid — a geographer and climatologist who studies Death Valley for decades.
The two came to the conclusion that it was “quite impossible from a meteorological point of view” for Death Valley to reach 134 degrees on July 10, 1913.
Burt argued that the temperature in the region did not match the one recorded in Death Valley in 1913. Burt also doubted the observer who measured the temperature of the July day.
